A New Society

For all physical purposes, the new humex (the biological partnership of Xran and human) was outwardly indistinguishable from native man, but intra-culturally, the difference between human and humex was, to begin with, becoming progressively more vast. The humex were the leaders of the burgeoning new society and set out to recruit any humans that wandered into the society’s sphere. The next section of the novel would now concentrate on the rising society of the humex.

It was at this point I decided to gather the next thirty or so chapters under the title, “Book Two - The Ascent of Man,” and go back and label the first section of sixteen chapters, “Book One – Edge of Extinction.” At this point I began to envision at least four separate sections (Books). One of the reasons, I decided on multi-sections is that the novel looked like it would contain over one-hundred chapters, and even though the chapters would average only three to four pages, four separate sections would have their own separate and distinct focus with a strong thread connecting them. This, I thought, would make this long story easier to read and digest. As an alternative to this plan, I considered publishing separate books or publishing a series of short stories. In the end I made the story as concise as I thought was possible so that it could be wholly self-contained yet remain interesting.

The humex continue rapid progress as their superior intelligence is applied to the daily life of the group. Examples of how the humex began improving on the operations of ancient man highlight the differences in the multi-intelligent beings. The humans were trained to the best of their ability to learn – still rudimentary by humex standards, but quite far ahead of where they were. The humex organized and administered civic processes. They set up schools for both the ancients and the humex. Language development was the first order of business. Without a complex language base, progress would be stalled. This was one of the only exceptions to the ban on inter-species communication – between the Xrans still in orbit, the Xrans still beneath the orb in The Colony, and the humex. This exception was made so as to give a good head-start to an exceptionally well-functioning society. Not only were the humex becoming smarter, but so were the humans. The humans would never catch up to the humex, but they were surprisingly contributory to the society as a whole.

Physically – especially sexually, there was no difference in appearance between the humex and the human – and their sex-drive was on a par with each other. Not surprisingly then, mixed births resulted. And intelligence was mixed, although inter-intellectual babies inherited most of the intelligence from the humex, but not all. In a short period of time, it was necessary to categorize the various groups of society members, by their intelligence level so as to provide an affective level of schooling and training for each group up to each one’s abilities. This cultural strategy had been a hallmark of Xran civilization for thousands of years and would be a hallmark of the humex as well.
